Start your morning with a visit to Bryn Athyn Cathedral in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The Cathedral is of the early Gothic style, and the architecture both inside and out are stunning. Continue on through beautiful Bucks County countryside to Washington Crossing Historic Park where the local docents will regale everyone with stories of the Revolutionary War. From there it’s a short drive to New Hope, a riverside town bursting with boutique shops, art galleries, and the charming New Hope Railroad, and you’ll grab lunch in one of the many restaurants and cafes. The afternoon will be spent in Doylestown where you’ll discover the storybook architecture of Fonthill Castle and the Mercer Museum and look in at the Moravian Tile Works. We are on the Bucks County Wine Trail for Oenophiles under us and could stop at one of the great wineries along the route. The evening will be spent on the Delaware River at the 1740 House and Inn in Lumberville.
After a cozy breakfast at the hotel, we will drive to Bethlehem, where the iconic SteelStacks and Historic Moravian Bethlehem showcase the city’s rich past. We’ll explore the oldest building, the 1741 Gemeinhaus, the Central Moravian Church, God’s Acre cemetery, and the Colonial Industrial Quarter, which includes the 1762 Waterworks. Lunch will be at the Tap Room at the Hotel Bethlehem. After lunch we continue our journey and drive to the capitol of Pennsylvania; Harrisburg, PA. Learn about Pennsylvania’s pivotal role in American history with a visit to Harrisburg. We will visit the state capital, where you’ll tour the grand Pennsylvania State Capitol, a masterpiece of American Renaissance architecture. Enjoy free time late afternoon to walk & shop in Harrisburg or visit the National Civil War Museum. Overnight in Harrisburg at The Manor On Front.
After breakfast we’ll stroll along the Susquehanna River and visit Fort Hunter Mansion, a site rich in colonial and frontier history. Then travel to Hershey, where the legacy of Milton Hershey offers a unique perspective on early 20th-century industrial innovation and philanthropy. Tour the Hershey Story Museum to learn how Hershey built more than a chocolate empire—he created a model town for workers and funded the Milton Hershey School. Enjoy a visit to Hersheypark and the iconic Founders Hall, which celebrate Hershey’s vision of progress, education, and community development. We will end our Pennsylvania State exploration here and head back to Philadelphia, optional visit to a winery, Brandywine River Museum or Longwood Gardens available before returning to the city around dinner time. Perfect for history lovers and weekend explorers!
